That's a better post, mashed.

You might also be aware that the republican eternal backing of this has quite a lot to do with religion?

Re: Women are stupid.
If by "ignored" you mean "mentioned it in your first post of 10:14 Tue Jan 24", you'd have a point.

My point is that this bill is not about controlling women. It is not making abortions illegal. It about American money and where it goes. I have no opinion either way on the subject, but let's at least call it for what it is and not be dishonest enough to make out that evil Trump has somehow taken us back to the dark ages coz religion.

Re: Women are stupid.
The trouble, mashed, is that that is a part of the legislation which you chose to highlight, ignoring that the 1973 Helms amendment already prohibits US money being spent on abortions abroad so that money was NOT spent on those things and by signing this one, Trump ensures that US is not spent on providing advice and support to women in difficult (to say the least) circumstances who otherwise often take very dangerous steps to end their pregnancy.

As such, your pretence (by omissions) suggested something of a moral standpoint, you see.

Yes, I used those words because the ruling specifically applies to:

"The Mexico City Policy announced by President Reagan in 1984 required nongovernmental organizations to agree as a condition of their receipt of Federal funds that such organizations would neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.....taxpayer funds should not be used to pay for abortions or advocate or actively promote abortion, either here or abroad"

https://web.archive.org/web/20010604032136/http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/20010123-5.html

So I quoted it almost ad verbatum.

That's not "pretending" anything, I'm afraid.

Yes exactly so on our male dominated WHO we all agree that women are generally stupid...

Re: Women are stupid.
Was the women's march all about abortion then, H&P? I wasn't aware that it was.

I mentioned Islam just then as one of the organisers seems to be in favour of Sharia law, and since the topic at hand was abortion, I was wondering how the two issues may conflate.

I was talking about Islam the other day due to the rabid, often violent misogyny within Muslim communities, and the complete lack of opposition to it from the feminist community, who all of a sudden managed to mobilise millions of people to show their anger at... something or other which hasn't been decided yet.

Re: Women are stupid.
Mashed, I just thought you were pretending that it "promoted and provided" abortions because you said these words:

"relates to federal funding of international NGOs that promote and provide abortions."

You can kind of see why I thought you were suggesting that, can't you?

Are you Muslim mim?

You seem awfully preoccupied with sharia law in this discussion about women's rights to choose what happens to their bodies.

Re: Women are stupid.
I'm pretending nothing, and I don't have an opinion on whether abortion is right or wrong.

"The "Global Gag Rule," otherwise known as the Mexico City Policy, requires that any overseas organization receiving U.S. aid not have anything to do with abortion."

^ from the first result on google, which seems to be pretty against the ruling. The summary being: US aid shouldn't go anywhere near foreign abortions.

The ruling has been in place throughout every single Republican presidency since it was first introduced, I have no opinion on whether it's right or wrong, but let's not pretend Trump has done something he hasn't by following suit from his predecessors.

You're right. Context is all important here and the situation a pregnant woman might find herself in - in Bangladesh, for example - is usually very different from that in the US. I'm absolutely not in favour of abortion when used as a kind of post-conception convenience, but there are certainly times when it can be considered the lesser of two evils.

AfM 11:10 Tue Jan 24
Re: Women are stupid.
Mashed, why are you pretending that they "promote and provide" abortions with the money?

The 1973 Helms amendment already prohibits US money being spent on abortions abroad.

The one Trump has signed, on the other hand, stops US money being spent on providing advice and support to women in difficult (to say the least) circumstances who otherwise often take very dangerous steps to end their pregnancy.

It seems like, contrary to what you say, you are taking something of a moral standpoint.

Anyone know what the Sharia stance on abortion is?

I'm only asking because march organiser Linda Sarsour, has tweeted and spoken in favour of Sharia law.

Re: Women are stupid.
I am happy with the UK law as it is which I believe is abortion is legal up to 24 weeks with no limit if the mothers health is in danger or there are foetal abnormalities.

No need to march in this country as I don't think there is any plan to revert to DINOSAUR ABORTION methods.

For what it's worth, the most vehement anti-abortion people I've ever known have been women.

Would you allow abortion at 40 weeks? If your answer to that is 'no', and I sincerely hope it is, then you have conceded that it isn't a clear-cut issue and that the child has rights also.

As I said earlier, I gave up on it as a conundrum too tricky for me to fathom a long while ago.

mashed in maryland 10:14 Tue Jan 24
Re: Women are stupid.
The executive order that Trump has just signed, which is what I assume Sven is on about, relates to federal funding of international NGOs that promote and provide abortions.

So basically he doesn't want American money going towards promoting abortions in foreign countries (using American money to perform the abortions themselves has been banned since 1973).

It's not about bible bashing or controlling women.

There are various rights and wrongs at hand here but let's not pretend it's something it's not, and out of all the signs, interviews with participants, online discussion, articles in everything from the Guardian to the Mail to HuffPo, I didn't see a single mention of this piece of legislation.

It's probably also worth mentioning that had Trump *not* enacted this policy, he'd have been the first Republican president ever to have not done so since it had been thought up by Reagan over 30 years ago.

Meanwhile 95% of baby girls born in Somalia have their vaginas sliced up, preventing them from ever enjoying sex and massively increasing the rate of lethal complications during childbirth, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali remains on the SPLC's list of "anti-Muslim extremists" for speaking out against it.
